Atami Onsen (hot spring) in Shizuoka Prefecture is one of the oldest hot springs in Japan as it opened about 1200 years ago. It is known that it had been favored by the shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa, and also successive shoguns ordered to deliver the water from Atami to Edo (Tokyo) where the Edo castle existed. Because of its dignity with long history, and evolution along with modern needs, Atami has always been ranked high among hot springs for many years.

Not only 100-year-old tree, but also 472 plum trees in 59 varieties compete to bloom at “Atami Plum Garden. ”
Opened in 1886, “Atami Plum Garden” has a large number, and various types of plum trees. Early-blooming trees usually start blooming in late November, and it passes onto middle and late-blooming ones, one after another. “Plum Festival” is held between early January and early March, and you can enjoy watching beautiful plum blossoms and its scent at any time during the festival. Not only a foot spa and souvenir shops, but also other events such as rakugo (traditional comic storytelling) and geisha performances are planned depending on a day. Sweet sake will also be served for free. As well as plum bloom in spring, you can enjoy astonishingly beautiful autumn foliage, which is said to be the latest foliage throughout the country. “Momiji Matsuri” (Autumn Leaves Festival) is also held between the mid November and early December.

Approximately 15 minutes walk from Atami Station, “Nikkotei Oyu,” used to be an inn, is a day visit hot spring facility, which has a nostalgic atmosphere of Showa era. You can use the large salon of 30 tatami (equivalent to 50 square meters) spaces to relax after soaking in both indoor and open-air bathtubs. Also, if a bath for small party is available, you can occupy it with your group with no extra charge.

The essential for Atami's gourmet is dishes using local fish directly from Atami Fish Market and ports of Ajiro and Izusan. This long-established folksy Japanese restaurant offers both Japanese and western style cuisine. Most popular dish of the restaurant is the Japanese style bibimbap using fresh local horse mackerel and plum flavored miso. They cook a live horse mackerel directly from the fish tank at the restaurant.
