2018.06.13

When you are travelling Japan, one concern is where to stay. There are many hotels especially in Tokyo, but how can you choose the most suitable one for yourself?

What is important tip for choosing a hotel in Tokyo?

What matters the most is the area. You may get to anyplace by taking public transportation. However, considering the time, we recommend staying around sightseeing spots you wish to visit or around convenient train stop.

Example: If you want to visit Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa, it is best to stay at a place near Asakusa Station on the subway the Ginza Line or Toei Asakusa Line. It is convenient because you can directly access to Asakusa Station without transfer. Staying around Ueno Station, where you can go straight from Narita Airport by Keisei Line, is close to Asakusa, is also recommended. As soon as dropping your luggage at your hotel, let’s explore Asakusa!

Three reasons to choose hotels around the station when staying in Tokyo

1. You can return to your hotel room and drop your luggage or what you bought easily.
2. While traveling, people usually start a day in early morning to use their time effectively. In order to move within the Tokyo metropolitan area as short as possible when commuting rush, staying near stations is one of the options.
3. When traveling, we usually have heavy luggage and must carry it in a transportation between airports and accommodation. Staying near stations may reduce the travel between the airport and your accommodation. Direct trains and airport limousine bus services may be available too.

Before choosing the area, you should decide sightseeing spots and train station area. Thinking about these two points, I will introduce some of the accommodation areas in Tokyo that I recommend!

1. Accommodation area of Tokyo, Japan: near Ginza and Tokyo stations

1.	Accommodation area of Tokyo, Japan: near Ginza and Tokyo stations
Ginza is very near from Tokyo Station, about 15 minutes on foot. It is just one stop by Marunouchi Subway Line, and takes only 2 minutes. The transportation network in the vicinity is developed and it is convenient to go to sightseeing spots such as the Imperial Palace, Tsukiji fish market etc. Of course, it is also recommended that Ginza itself is an attractive tourist destination. On holiday, the main street is transformed into car-free mall (vehicle traffic is temporary closed), and you can take a relaxing walk around the main street of Ginza.

2. Accommodation area of Tokyo, Japan: Shinjuku

2.	Accommodation area of Tokyo, Japan: Shinjuku
Shinjuku is on the west side of Tokyo Station. Not only Shinjuku itself is a famous tourist spot, but also recommended as a sightseeing base for near towns, Shibuya and Harajuku. Various airport limousine bus services and a direct train, Narita Express are available, and access from Haneda and Narita airports is also very convenient.

Shinjuku has an image of all-night city, but it is also a business district, and there are many business hotels as well. There might be some concerns about safety of Kabukicho, one of the the amusement spots in Tokyo, but its safety has been improved in recent years. Although I walked around there by myself, there was nothing to worry about.

Purposely stay in places other than the main stations of Tokyo?

Ginza and Shinjuku are convenient stations and located in the center of Tokyo, but there is also a concern, which is the size of stations where you might get lost easily.
Therefore, choosing smaller stations near the main stations is also another option. For example, if you desire to stay in Shinjuku, Takadanobaba Station might be one of them.

How can you find good deals on accommodation in Tokyo?

In each area of Tokyo, there is a wide range of hotels, and the prices are different with the grades. Room rates may also vary dramatically depending on the seasons.

If you want to save money for your stay, there are capsule hotels and business hotels. It's about 10,000 yen per night for a business hotel. If it is not weekends, high season or consecutive holidays, it can be between 6,000 and 7,000 yen.

Also, even the same hotel and room type, the rate may vary depending on the reservation method. As you probably know, there are discounts if you go through websites or travel agencies. The official website of the hotels often offers the best price too. There are sometimes other discount options including early-bird, so you’d better compare several sites before making reservation. You might save several thousand yen, so early action is the key to success.

What kind of hotel would be the best if going for a day trip to the suburbs of Tokyo?

As you know, one of the charms of Tokyo is that it is the city having both traditional culture and modernity. But if you want to escape from the city-center for a while, selecting the area is very important.

There are many attractive sightseeing spots such as Hakone, Izu, Kamakura, Nikko, Kawagoe, and Tokyo Disneyland in the suburbs of Tokyo. For the one day excursion, you’d better start your day early in the morning. However, if you pick a wrong station, you may have a chance to be stuck in a crowded train in rush hour. Avoid taking trains, which run between the city center and suburb towns where many commuters live.
