“Yuzawa” is the snow resort about 70 minutes away at the shortest from Tokyo!
Echigo-Yuzawa Station is about 70 minutes away from Tokyo Station at the shortest, if you use the shinkansen bullet train. It is a huge snow resort area where there are 13 unique slopes within Yuzawamachi such as slopes that are directly connected to the shinkansen station and slopes you can walk to from a station. After skiing, you can enjoy the hot spring, which will warm you up, drink delicious sake, and eat local gourmet dishes characteristic of this area where produces famous brand name rice in Japan.

This ski area boasts an excellent accessibility as it is directly connected to the station's ticket gate. As they have a variety of rental ski equipment and you can rent them, you don’t have to carry heavy baggage. Tourists from abroad do not need to worry about language barriers since many foreign staff are stationed. There are varied activities such as the kanjiki (traditional snow shoes made from woven tree branches and vines) tours, sledding, or ski school with foreign language interpreter in English, Chinese, and Thai. Their activities can suit everyone from those who see snow for the first time to the advanced who seriously want to enjoy skiing and snowboarding.

You can enjoy powder snow at 1,000 meters above sea level at this slope. Go to the mountain top station using the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway, which is 8 minutes away by foot from Echigo-Yuzawa Station, and you will find a vast snowy world of Tanigawa Mountain Range and Echigo Sanzan. Not only can you enjoy skiing and snowboarding, you can also appreciate the snowscape from a picturesque terrace.
“Yuzawa Kogen Ski Resort”

Skiers-only, and connected directly to the New Otani Hotel – “NASPA Ski Resort”
Snowboarding banned slopes are popular because beginner skiers can feel safer. Tourists from abroad can take ski lessons without worries, since they have lessons in English (booking in advance mandatory). Further, you can enjoy playing in the snow in the sled-only area where they have a snow escalator. After skiing, you can have a great time in the hotel's large public bath, heated swimming pool, relaxation facilities and more. If you take the free shuttle bus, which connects NASPA, Yuzawa Kogen, and GALA, you will reach the NASPA from the station in just 3 minutes.

After hitting the slopes, why not go on an elegant “open-air hot spring hopping”
Yuzawamachi has 5 communal hot springs each with different tastes. Within walking distance from Echigo-Yuzawa Station, there is “Yama-no-yu,” which Yasunari Kawabata, Japan's first Nobel Prize winner for Literature, and whose representative work is “Snow Country,” is said to have visited. “Komako-no-yu” has a calm atmosphere, and “Kaido-no-yu” that has an expansive open-air bath is 15 minutes away by taxi from the station. If you plan to visit all 5 hot springs, “Sotoyu-meguri ticket," which 2700yen can be discounted to 1500 yen is highly recommended.

This shop, located right in front of the ticket gate of Echigo-Yuzawa Station, has a sake-sampling section called “Koshinomuro.” All sake from Niigata, one of Japan's most famous sake producing areas gather here. You can taste up to 5 kinds of sake by paying 500 yen, and will discover the various tastes of sake. At the “Yukindo,” “Bakudan onigiri rice ball,” made with 100 percent brand name rice Koshihikari from Minamiuonuma is popular.

Jizake Bar Yamashin is a Japanese-style bar, 3 minutes away on foot from the east exit of Echigo-Yuzawa Station. They have high quality sake such as Daiginjo or limited sake, you can taste from 60ml and up. Enjoy comparing various sake and find your favorite ones.
