7 Best Breathtaking Scenery and Foods in Shikoku


Among tourist spots in Japan, Shikoku has become increasingly popular in recent years among tourists from overseas. In the “Hospitality for foreigners 2017 Category” of “Onsen Sosenkyo 2017 (Hot Spring Election 2017)” the Oboke-Iya Hot Spring of Miyoshi-City, Tokushima Prefecture was selected No.1, so among other factors, the Shikoku region is attracting attention even more. Kagawa/ Ehime Route—enjoy the superb view of the Seto Inland Sea Course

It takes about an hour and 10 minutes by ferry from Shinokayama Port to get to Tonoshoko Port of Shodoshima Island. The greatest scenic point of Shodoshima is “Angel Road.” Because the road appears and disappears depending on the rise and fall of tides, there is a romantic legend which is “your dream will come true if you walk the road holding hands with someone precious to you.”

It is approximately 60 minutes by ferry from Tonoshoko Port to Takamatsuko Port. It is about an hour and 15 minutes from JR Takamatsu Station to Niihama Station by limited express of JR Yosan Line. From there, you get to Hadeba Zone in 20 minutes by bus, where there is a theme park which is a former site of a copper mine. From the theme park, using a regular tourist bus (operated March through November, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays; on weekdays, it will operate when there are 5 or more passengers) you will reach in 30 minutes, the Tonaru Area which is 750 meters high. The Tonaru Area is called the “Machu Picchu of the Orient” with many profound warehouses made from granite, etc.

The Shimonada Station is one of the most popular stations on the JR Yosan Line, which you can enjoy the beautiful view of Seto Inland Sea from the train windows. When you get off the train at Shimonada Station, a vast Seto Inland Sea will come into view, and you will feel refreshed. You should also see the orange colored sea at dusk.

If you are thinking of buying a souvenir from Kagawa, the “Udon noodle prefecture,” you should get their hand-made fried confectionery made with Sanuki udon. The Sanuki udon is elastic, and when fried, it becomes very crispy and light. It is so delicious, you just can't stop eating.

Kagawa, Tokushima, Kochi route—enjoy the superb view of the mountains and sea course

It is 20 minutes on foot from Kotohira Station of JR Dosan Line. Kotohira-gu Palace, which is in Kotohirayama Mountain, has always attracted faith from ancient times as a god of maritime patronage, agriculture and medicine, and 4 million people still visit every year. There are 785 stone steps to the main shrine, and the view of the Sanuki Plain from the observation deck is superb. Within the Kotohira-gu, historical buildings such as the “Asahisha,” designated as an important cultural asset of Japan are impressive.

50 minutes from JR Dosan Line Kotohira Station by limited express and 15minutes from JR Oboke Station by regular route bus, there is a hot spring area. It was awarded No.1 in the “Hospitality for foreigners 2017 Category” of “Onsen Sosenkyo 2017 (Hot Spring Election 2017).” Further, the hot spring area was the only place in Japan selected as one of the best places to travel 2018 by America's major travel magazine “Travel + Leisure.” Popular points are the beautiful valley with about 8 kilometers of huge or strangely shaped rocks, and also the “Kazura-bashi Bridge” which is one of the three major unusual bridges of Japan. Among tourists from abroad, experiencing Japanese culture such as “soba noodle making” are also popular.

“Katsurahama Beach” is one of the scenic spots that represent Kochi Prefecture. You can see a splendid scenery like a miniature garden that harmonizes the green of the pine that grows in the background, the 5 colored pebbles of the beach, and the azure ocean. At the eastern tip of Cape Ryuzu is the statue of the Ryoma Sakamoto, a patriot of the end of the Edo period, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. You can go to Katsurahama Beach in about 30 minutes by bus from Kochi Station on the JR Dosan Line.

The longest big river in Shikoku is a total length of 196 km and is known as “the last clear stream” and traditional fishing is still carried such as “Hiburiryo (fishing by kindling a torch) and “Shibazukeryo (fishing using a trap made from brushwood).” Many bridges designed with no railings and to be underwater during a flood in order to avoid flowing away still remain. From JR Kochi Station to the center of Shimanto City, Tosa Kuroshio Railway's Nakamura Station is about 1 hour 40 minutes.

The accompaniment for rice made by a fresh fish retailer established in the early years of Meiji era is very popular. It is made by boiling bonito well in a secret salted and sweetened sauce, then the flesh is flaked, and seasoned with spice. This fine product received first prize in the TV show “Meshi tomo (accompaniment for rice) Grand Prix,” among 353 items from all over Japan. It also received the “Kochi Prefecture Local Industry Award.”
